A day late and a dollar short...
Or something like that 😂
When it rains, it pours. That's what happened in my house yesterday, literally. I felt like I walked into a rainstorm as I walked into my basement with water pouring from the bathroom pipes. My stomach dropped as I ran back upstairs to shut the water off. You see, I have spent the last week renovating our tub/shower surround and yesterday had the absolute pleasure of finally breaking it in! I turned on the spout, and diverted the water to the shower head. I realized I had left our bath mats downstairs in the dryer and went down to get them. That's when I found our unexpected indoor waterfall. By the time I got upstairs, Joe was in the bathroom trying to figure out what was going on. I know it's bad when it's bad enough to get Joe out of bed... we inspected the pipes and quickly determined where the water was coming from, and turned off the faucet. I ended up calling my dad at 10pm trying to troubleshoot and figure out how to fix this shower. I felt horrible, like I had royally screwed up our shower. But my dad and I were able to figure out the problem. Long story short, we had an issue with the tub spout that with my dad's help, I was able to troubleshoot and eventually fix. By 1am, I had put everything back together and fixed the leak. Joe successfully used the shower this morning with no leaking! Today he told me I was like Bob the Builder, but better. I'll take that compliment I suppose. Ha!
For about a year now, Joe and I have discussed redoing our shower. When we moved into our house, we had noticed that our shower had tile up, and a surround glued overtop. We also noticed some mildew or mold growing around the edges of the surround and the caulk. It had long been on our to do list to fix and update so it was clean and healthy, and with the news of our baby on the way, it became a much higher priority to have a clean and healthy bathroom. I finally set out to do it last week. Last Thursday, I began tearing out the surround (a much harder task than I anticipated given that it was glued to the tile!). Friday I tore down the tile and the cement board behind it, and then took a break Friday evening for a glorious maternity shoot. Saturday, I had to do some work with the plumbing before I could put up new green board. Saturday night I started the process of mudding and taping over the new drywall. Sunday I was finally ready to glue up the new shower surround! This was one of the scariest parts for me as there is very little room for error with something like that. I had to trim two of the pieces, and cut the holes for the plumbing. It was terrifying. Finally, on Monday, I was able to caulk the surround and install the faceplates, faucet handles, tub spout, and shower head. Everything was coming together! I ran into some trouble with the pipe leading to the tub spout, but was able to figure it out (or so I thought. Obviously I ran into more issues, but ultimately was able to figure it out for real!).
Overall, Joe and I are both so happy with our new shower. It is cleaner and looks so much better. And I'm really proud of myself for doing it by myself! I am so thankful for friends and family who I could go to for questions and concerns during this process. And while the weekend was long and exhausting, I am so glad I was able to take the time to do this! Check out the progress photos below!
**Disclaimer: I am not a professional by any scope of the imagination, but am proud of myself nonetheless for this project and having a functioning shower despite the struggles along the way 😂
