One of the biggest questions I get from seniors: What should I wear for my senior photos?

As a Kansas City senior photographer, I strive to make every part of your senior photo experience flow smoothly and effortlessly, including how to choose the right outfits. All of my seniors get the benefit of walking through my signature Senior Style Guide with me, which outlines specifics on how to choose locations, what to wear, when I shoot my sessions, and so much more. But since I get this question so often, I wanted to address it here!

There are a lot of things to consider as you choose your outfit for your senior session. My goal with every session is to create images that are timeless, capturing you as you are today and celebrating who you are becoming. Your outfit should point back to you, not create a version of yourself that feels forced or unfamiliar. The most meaningful senior portraits are the ones that reflect who you truly are—the personality, gifts, and beauty God intentionally designed in you. The focus of these images should be on you and this once-in-a-lifetime season, not on trends that will come and go. To do this, I always recommend a few things:

Choose at Least One Dress:

I am a sucker for a good dress. I always guide my seniors to choose at least one dress among their outfit choices. Long and flowy photographs best, although shorter cocktail dresses have their place too and are gorgeous in their own right, and sleeves make everything better!

If you are looking for an excuse to buy a new dress, you don't need to look any further. This is it! And there's no such thing as too fancy, either. This is your senior year. It only happens once, so let's celebrate it like the grand occasion it is!

When choosing a dress for your senior photos, look for movement, flattering fits, and colors that make you feel confident. Those details photograph beautifully and help create a timeless look.

Choose Timeless Colors:

When considering color, sophisticated and timeless are your go-tos. Light neutrals, earth tones, soft pastels, or jewel tones are my favorites. Bright, bold colors are beautiful but they can sometimes pull the focus off of you, and that's the opposite of our goal here.

Soft and sophisticated colors put the focus squarely where it belongs: you, your personality shining through the photos, and this incredible season in your life.

As a senior photographer, I've found that neutral and classic color palettes tend to age beautifully, helping your images look just as stunning years from now as they do today.

Skip the logos and distracting patterns:

Our goal is always timeless, and large logos, distracting patterns, and graphics can quickly date an image. I always encourage my seniors to avoid these and instead shoot for solid colors, clean lines, and simple textures.

This helps keep the focus right where it belongs—on you—and creates images that will feel just as beautiful years from now as they do today.

Don't Forget the Shoes:

Finally, the SHOES. Heels are my absolute favorite because they create great lines and help your legs appear toned and elongated. Choose a neutral color and you can't go wrong.

Even if heels aren't your style, be intentional with your footwear. Clean, coordinated shoes can elevate an outfit, while worn or distracting shoes can draw attention away from the overall look.

a quick note about cap and gown photos:

If you'd like to bring your cap and gown for a few photos, we can absolutely do that! While I don't recommend making it your entire session, it can be a fun way to celebrate this milestone and capture a few classic graduation portraits.

Follow these tips and your senior session is off to a great start! The most important thing, though, is choosing outfits that make you feel confident, comfortable, and authentically yourself. When you feel amazing, it always shows in your senior photos.
